Śāriputra replied:
No, Subhūti!

At that time, Venerable Subhūti said to Śāriputra:
If all dharmas are firm and true, abiding, completely without possession, and all are impossible to apprehend, then which dharmas are said to be able to regress with regard to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?

Śāriputra said to Subhūti:
As the Venerable One has said, within the patient acceptance of the non-arising of dharmas there is completely no dharma, nor is there a Bodhisattva who can be said to regress from the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. If this is so, then why does the Buddha teach about the three kinds of sentient beings abiding in the Bodhisattva vehicle? It should only be said that there is one. Likewise, as the Venerable One has said, there should not be three different Bodhisattva vehicles, but only one vehicle, namely the Perfectly Enlightened One vehicle.

At that time, Venerable Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra said to Śāriputra:
Venerable One should first ask Venerable Subhūti whether there is only one Bodhisattva vehicle; afterward, you may raise the objection that there should not be established three different vehicles, but only one vehicle, the vehicle of Perfect Enlightenment.

At this time, Śāriputra asked Subhūti:
Is there only one Bodhisattva vehicle?

Venerable Subhūti said to Śāriputra:

Venerable Śāriputra, what do you think? Within the Suchness of all dharmas, are there truly three different characteristics of sentient beings abiding in the Bodhisattva vehicle? Namely, are there those who are certain to regress from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, those who are certain not to regress, and those who are indeterminate?

Śāriputra replied:
No, Subhūti!

Venerable Śāriputra, what do you think? Within the Suchness of all dharmas, are there truly three different Bodhisattva vehicles: the Śrāvaka Bodhisattva vehicle, the Pratyekabuddha vehicle, and the Bodhisattva vehicle of Perfect Enlightenment?

Śāriputra replied:
No, Subhūti!

Venerable Śāriputra, what do you think? Within the Suchness of all dharmas, is there truly a Bodhisattva vehicle of Perfect Enlightenment?

Śāriputra replied:
No, Subhūti!

Venerable Śāriputra, what do you think? Within the Suchness of dharmas, are there one, two, or three characteristics?

Śāriputra replied:
No, Subhūti!

Venerable Śāriputra, what do you think? Within the Suchness of all dharmas, is there a single dharma, a single Bodhisattva, that can be apprehended?

Śāriputra replied:
No, Subhūti!

Venerable Subhūti again said to Śāriputra:
If all dharmas are firm and true, abiding, completely without possession, and all are impossible to apprehend, then why can Venerable Śāriputra think in this way: “Such a Bodhisattva will certainly regress from the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment of the Buddhas; such a Bodhisattva will certainly not regress from the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment of the Buddhas; such a Bodhisattva is certainly indeterminate; such a Bodhisattva belongs to the Śrāvaka vehicle; such a Bodhisattva belongs to the Pratyekabuddha vehicle; such a Bodhisattva belongs to the Perfect Enlightenment vehicle”—are these three, or are they one?

Venerable Śāriputra, if a Great Bodhisattva completely possesses nothing with regard to all dharmas, if they can also correctly believe in and understand the Suchness of all dharmas, completely without attainment, and with regard to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment of the Buddhas also have no attainment, you should know that this is a true Great Bodhisattva.

Venerable Śāriputra, if a Great Bodhisattva hears teachings on the Suchness of dharmas, whose characteristics cannot be apprehended in this way, and their mind is neither frightened, nor afraid, nor terrified, nor doubtful, nor regretful, nor turned back, nor sunk, then that Great Bodhisattva will quickly attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.

At that time, the Buddha said to Venerable Subhūti:
Subhūti, excellent! Excellent! You are now able, for the sake of teaching the Great Bodhisattvas, to expound the most essential Dharma teaching. What you have taught is entirely due to the complete support of the Tathāgata’s majestic spiritual power, and is not through your own power.

Subhūti, if a Great Bodhisattva gives rise to profound faith and understanding regarding the characteristics of the Suchness of dharmas that cannot be apprehended, and thoroughly understands the non-differentiated characteristics of all dharmas, hears teachings on the Suchness of dharmas whose characteristics cannot be apprehended in this way, and their mind is neither frightened, nor afraid, nor terrified, nor doubtful, nor regretful, nor turned back, nor sunk, then that Great Bodhisattva will quickly attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.

At this time, Śāriputra addressed the Buddha:
World-Honored One, if a Great Bodhisattva accomplishes this dharma, will they quickly attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment?

The Buddha said:
Śāriputra, it is so, it is so! If a Great Bodhisattva accomplishes this dharma, they will quickly attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and will not fall into the state of a Śrāvaka or a Pratyekabuddha.

Chapter 48: BODHISATTVA ABIDING (1)

At that time, Venerable Subhūti said to the Buddha:
World-Honored One, if a Great Bodhisattva wishes to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, where should they abide and how should they abide?

The Buddha said:
