THE GREAT PRAJÑĀPĀRAMITĀ SŪTRA
VOLUME 585
Chapter on the Perfection of Pure Precepts (2)

At that time, Śāriputra again said to Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra:

“If Bodhisattvas practicing the Perfection of Pure Precepts see even a little dharma called an agent, you should know that although they abide in the dharmas of Bodhisattvas, they are said to have abandoned the dharmas of Bodhisattvas. This is an irrational mental activity of Bodhisattvas. If they give rise to such irrational mental activity, you should know that they are called Bodhisattvas who violate the precepts.

Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra then asked the venerable Śāriputra:

“If Bodhisattvas do not see even a little dharma called an agent, these Bodhisattvas uphold and maintain the Perfection of Pure Precepts without any transgression. Then what dharma, with regard to this Bodhisattva’s Perfection of Pure Precepts, is beneficial and what is diminishing?”

Śāriputra replied:

“There is no dharma that, with regard to this Bodhisattva’s Perfection of Pure Precepts, is either beneficial or diminishing. If one sees even a little dharma as being beneficial or diminishing with regard to this Perfection of Pure Precepts, one should know that this is a Bodhisattva grasping onto pure precepts. If Bodhisattvas see even a little dharma concerning this Perfection of Pure Precepts and consider it beneficial or diminishing, then these Bodhisattvas cannot protect and uphold the Bodhisattva’s Perfection of Pure Precepts. If Bodhisattvas do not see even a little dharma called an agent, then these Bodhisattvas truly protect and uphold the Bodhisattva’s Perfection of Pure Precepts. If Bodhisattvas uphold pure precepts and dedicate them toward seeking the wisdom of Omniscience, only then are they called the Perfection of Pure Precepts. If Bodhisattvas uphold pure precepts but do not dedicate them toward seeking the wisdom of Omniscience, you should know that although these precepts are called precepts, they are not the Perfection of Pure Precepts, or they merely seek worldly results or the fruits of the Two Vehicles.

Furthermore, Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra, if Bodhisattvas, according to their practice of giving, always make great compassion the foremost, constantly arouse the mind, and dedicate it in accordance with the wisdom of Omniscience, you should know that this is called possessing the complete Bodhisattva precepts.

Furthermore, Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra, if Bodhisattvas, when sentient beings strike them, scold them, slander them, insult them, or despise them in various ways, practice patience accordingly, always making great compassion the foremost, constantly arousing the mind, and dedicating it in accordance with the wisdom of Omniscience, you should know that this is called possessing the complete Bodhisattva precepts.

Furthermore, Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra, if Bodhisattvas, wishing to rescue all sentient beings from the suffering of birth and death in evil paths, constantly practice diligence, always making great compassion the foremost, constantly arousing the mind, and dedicating it in accordance with the wisdom of Omniscience, you should know that this is called possessing the complete Bodhisattva precepts.

Furthermore, Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra, if Bodhisattvas cultivate meditative concentration and think:

‘I should arouse superior meditative concentration. Through this, I will develop superior spiritual powers, know the various mental activities of sentient beings, and thus teach and transmit the Dharma to them, causing them to escape the sufferings of birth and death in evil paths. Furthermore, I will harmonize the afflictions of body and mind, become a pure field of merit for sentient beings, become worthy of acceptance, and give rise to the wisdom of Omniscience.’

Having such thoughts, they cultivate meditative concentration. All of this is done with great compassion as the foremost, constantly arousing the mind, and dedicating it in accordance with the wisdom of Omniscience. You should know that this is called possessing the complete Bodhisattva precepts.
