World-Honored One, just as afflicted and unafflicted of the dhāraṇī gate, or afflicted and unafflicted of the samādhi gate – these are ultimately unobtainable, because their nature is non-existent – how much less is there the name “afflicted, unafflicted” of the dhāraṇī gate and the name “afflicted, unafflicted” of the samādhi gate! Since these names are already non-existent, how could one say that the name “afflicted or unafflicted” of the dhāraṇī gate is the great Bodhisattva; the name “afflicted or unafflicted” of the samādhi gate is the great Bodhisattva.
Subhuti, upon what meaning did you contemplate to say that the name “worldly or supramundane” of the dhāraṇī gate is not the great Bodhisattva; the name “worldly or supramundane” of the samādhi gate is not the great Bodhisattva?
World-Honored One, just as worldly and supramundane of the dhāraṇī gate, or worldly and supramundane of the samādhi gate – these are ultimately unobtainable, because their nature is non-existent – how much less is there the name “worldly, supramundane” of the dhāraṇī gate and the name “worldly, supramundane” of the samādhi gate! Furthermore, Subhuti, upon what meaning did you contemplate to say that the name “Joyful Ground” is not the great Bodhisattva; the name “Stainless Ground, Luminous Ground, Blazing Wisdom Ground, Difficult to Conquer Ground, Present before One Ground, Far-reaching Ground, Immovable Ground, Good Wisdom Ground, or Dharma Cloud Ground” is not the great Bodhisattva?
The Venerable Subhuti replied:
World-Honored One, just as the Joyful Ground, or the Stainless Ground through Dharma Cloud Ground – these are ultimately unobtainable, because their nature is non-existent – how much less is there the name “Joyful Ground” and the name “Stainless Ground through Dharma Cloud Ground”! Since these names are already non-existent, how could one say that the name “Joyful Ground” is the great Bodhisattva; the name “Stainless Ground through Dharma Cloud Ground” is the great Bodhisattva.
