Chapter 23: THE HEAVENLY SONS (2)
Subhūti replied:
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the perfection of generosity as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the perfections of pure precepts, patience, energy, meditation, and wisdom as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the perfection of generosity… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the four dhyānas as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the four immeasurables and four formless concentrations as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the four dhyānas… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the eight liberations as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the eight spheres of mastery, nine successive concentrations, and ten totalities as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the eight liberations… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the four foundations of mindfulness as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the four right efforts, four bases of supernatural power, five spiritual faculties, five powers, seven factors of enlightenment, and noble eightfold path as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the four foundations of mindfulness… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the dharma gate of liberation through emptiness as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the dharma gates of liberation through signlessness and wishlessness as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the dharma gate of liberation through emptiness… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the five kinds of eyes as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the six supernatural powers as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the five kinds of eyes… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the ten powers of the Buddha as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the four fearlessnesses, four unobstructed knowledges, great loving-kindness, great compassion, great empathetic joy, great equanimity, and eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the ten powers of the Buddha… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the dharma of non-forgetfulness as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the nature of constant equanimity as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the dharma of non-forgetfulness… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen all the dhāraṇī dharma gates as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen all the samādhi dharma gates as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of all the dhāraṇī dharma gates… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the wisdom of all-knowing as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the wisdom of the aspects of the path and wisdom of all aspects as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the wisdom of all-knowing… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the Śrāvaka vehicle as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the Pratyekabuddha vehicle and the Supreme Vehicle as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the Śrāvaka vehicle… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen stream-enterers as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen once-returners, non-returners, and arahants as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of stream-enterers… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the stream-entry path and stream-entry fruit as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the once-return path, once-return fruit, non-return path, non-return fruit, arahant path, and arahant fruit as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the stream-entry path and stream-entry fruit… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen pratyekabuddhas as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the pratyekabuddha path and pratyekabuddha fruit as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of pratyekabuddhas… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen Great Bodhisattvas as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the Samyaksaṃbuddha as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of Great Bodhisattvas… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the dharmas of Great Bodhisattvas as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the fruit of Supreme Enlightenment as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the dharmas of Great Bodhisattvas… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the stage of Extreme Joy as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the stages of Stainless, Luminous, Radiant Wisdom, Difficult to Conquer, Manifest, Far-Reaching, Immovable, Excellent Wisdom, and Cloud of Dharma as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the stage of Extreme Joy… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the dharmas of the stage of Extreme Joy as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the dharmas of the stages of Stainless, Luminous, Radiant Wisdom, Difficult to Conquer, Manifest, Far-Reaching, Immovable, Excellent Wisdom, and Cloud of Dharma as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the dharmas of the stage of Extreme Joy… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the ordinary-person stage as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the Lineage stage, Eighth stage, Perfect Vision stage, Diminishing stage, Free-from-Desire stage, Already-Accomplished stage, Pratyekabuddha stage, Bodhisattva stage, and Tathāgata stage as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the ordinary-person stage… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the dharmas of the ordinary-person stage as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the dharmas of the Lineage stage, Eighth stage, Perfect Vision stage, Diminishing stage, Free-from-Desire stage, Already-Accomplished stage, Pratyekabuddha stage, Bodhisattva stage, and Tathāgata stage as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the dharmas of the ordinary-person stage… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: one has already seen the conditioned realm as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; one has already seen the unconditioned realm as like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because the self-nature of the conditioned realm… is empty.
Heavenly sons, you should know: for this reason I say: for sentient beings who are like illusions, regarding objects like illusions, one proclaims a dharma like an illusion; for sentient beings who are like transformations, regarding objects like transformations, one proclaims a dharma like a transformation; for sentient beings who are like dreams, regarding objects like dreams, one proclaims a dharma like a dream.
At that time, the heavenly sons asked Subhūti:
“The Venerable One has now only spoken about how what is seen — regarding self… form… through the fruit of Supreme Enlightenment — is like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. But does the Venerable One also speak about how what is seen — regarding Nirvāṇa, ultimately tranquil and wondrous — is like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream?”
Subhūti replied:
“Heavenly sons, I do not only speak about how what is seen — regarding self… form… through the fruit of Supreme Enlightenment — is like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream; I also speak about how what is seen — regarding Nirvāṇa, ultimately tranquil and wondrous — is like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Heavenly sons, you should know: even if there were a dharma superior to Nirvāṇa, I would also say that what is seen of it is like an illusion, like a transformation, like a dream. Why? Because illusion, transformation, and dream together with all dharmas up through Nirvāṇa are all not two, not two parts.
Chapter 24: RECEIVING THE TEACHING (1)
At that time, the Elder Śāriputra, the Elder Mahāmaudgalyāyana, the Elder Bearer of the Great Treasury, the Elder Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra, the Elder Mahākātyāyana, the Elder Mahākāśyapa… these great Śrāvakas together with immeasurable hundreds of thousands of Great Bodhisattvas simultaneously asked Subhūti:
“The dharma of the perfection of wisdom has been proclaimed as thus — profound and difficult to see, difficult to know, not the object of deliberation and reflection, a realm transcending deliberation and reflection, subtle, tranquil, supremely excellent and foremost, only self-realized by the noble and venerable ones, beyond the capacity of the wise of the world to measure — then with respect to such a dharma, who is capable of trusting in and receiving it?”
Subhūti replied:
“There are Great Bodhisattvas who abide in the non-regressing stage — with respect to this profound perfection of wisdom that is difficult to see, difficult to know, not the object of deliberation and reflection, a realm transcending deliberation and reflection, subtle, tranquil, supremely excellent and foremost — they are capable of deep trust and reception. Furthermore, there are arahants who have penetrated the noble truths and have completely eliminated all outflows, whose aspirations have been fulfilled — with respect to this perfection of wisdom, they are also capable of trust and reception. Furthermore, there are good men and good women who, in the presence of immeasurable and innumerable hundreds of thousands of hundred million Buddhas of the past, have always drawn close and made offerings, have made great vows and aspirations, have planted good seeds, have sharp and penetrating faculties, and have been accepted and received by good spiritual teachers — with respect to this profound perfection of wisdom, difficult to see, difficult to know, not the object of deliberation and reflection, a realm transcending deliberation and reflection, subtle, tranquil, supremely excellent and foremost — they are capable of trust and reception. Why? Because those such as these completely do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate form, nor do they use form to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, nor do they use feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate form, nor do they use form to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, nor do they use feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate form, nor do they use form to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, nor do they use feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate form, nor do they use form to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, nor do they use feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate form, nor do they use form to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, nor do they use feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate form, nor do they use form to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, nor do they use feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate form, nor do they use form to discriminate departed or non-departed; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness, nor do they use feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness to discriminate departed or non-departed.
Those such as these completely do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate the eye base, nor do they use the eye base to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base, nor do they use the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate the eye base, nor do they use the eye base to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base, nor do they use the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate the eye base, nor do they use the eye base to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base, nor do they use the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate the eye base, nor do they use the eye base to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base, nor do they use the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate the eye base, nor do they use the eye base to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base, nor do they use the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate the eye base, nor do they use the eye base to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base, nor do they use the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate the eye base, nor do they use the eye base to discriminate departed or non-departed; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base, nor do they use the ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind base to discriminate departed or non-departed.
Those such as these completely do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate the form base, nor do they use the form base to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base, nor do they use the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate the form base, nor do they use the form base to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base, nor do they use the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate the form base, nor do they use the form base to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base, nor do they use the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate the form base, nor do they use the form base to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base, nor do they use the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate the form base, nor do they use the form base to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base, nor do they use the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate the form base, nor do they use the form base to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base, nor do they use the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate the form base, nor do they use the form base to discriminate departed or non-departed; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base, nor do they use the sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma base to discriminate departed or non-departed.
Those such as these completely do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate the eye element, nor do they use the eye element to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate the form element, eye consciousness element, eye contact, and the feelings arising from eye contact as condition, nor do they use the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate the eye element, nor do they use the eye element to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition, nor do they use the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate the eye element, nor do they use the eye element to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition, nor do they use the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate the eye element, nor do they use the eye element to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition, nor do they use the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate the eye element, nor do they use the eye element to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition, nor do they use the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate the eye element, nor do they use the eye element to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition, nor do they use the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate the eye element, nor do they use the eye element to discriminate departed or non-departed; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition, nor do they use the form element through the feelings arising from eye contact as condition to discriminate departed or non-departed.
Those such as these completely do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate the ear element, nor do they use the ear element to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use empty or non-empty to discriminate the sound element, ear consciousness element, ear contact, and the feelings arising from ear contact as condition, nor do they use the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition to discriminate empty or non-empty; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate the ear element, nor do they use the ear element to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-signs or signless to discriminate the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition, nor do they use the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition to discriminate with-signs or signless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate the ear element, nor do they use the ear element to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use with-wishes or wishless to discriminate the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition, nor do they use the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition to discriminate with-wishes or wishless; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate the ear element, nor do they use the ear element to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use arising or non-arising to discriminate the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition, nor do they use the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition to discriminate arising or non-arising; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate the ear element, nor do they use the ear element to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use ceasing or non-ceasing to discriminate the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition, nor do they use the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition to discriminate ceasing or non-ceasing; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate the ear element, nor do they use the ear element to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use tranquil or non-tranquil to discriminate the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition, nor do they use the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition to discriminate tranquil or non-tranquil; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate the ear element, nor do they use the ear element to discriminate departed or non-departed; they do not use departed or non-departed to discriminate the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition, nor do they use the sound element through the feelings arising from ear contact as condition to discriminate departed or non-departed.
